Please drive safely! After numerous recent accidents, I want to encourage everyone to slow down. Careless driving is deadly. SC authorities encourage all motorists to get in the habit of using hands-free devices while on the road. They suggest pulling over when a driver needs to use a device while in a vehicle. Your life and the lives of other motorists are precious; please drive with caution and care!

The Lake Murray Association meeting will be held Tuesdays, August 27, at 6:30 pm at Salem United Methodist Church, Irmo.

The Arts sail into Chapin with 13 handcrafted, freestanding sailboats painted by the local artists from Chapin’s Crooked Creek Art League. The project will culminate in a community art project at the Labor Day Festival in September.

Congratulations to J.T. Thompson and J.J. Casey on South Carolina’s approval for Chapin’s Commercial Historic District. The twelve structures that comprise the historic district are located in the heart of downtown Chapin on Columbia Ave, Beaufort Street, Old Lexington, and Clark streets. The next step is to submit the information to the US Department of the Interior to be added to the National Register of Historic Places. The SC Department of Archives believes this could be as early as October.

Irmo High School is looking for nominations for the school’s Hall of Fame class of 2020. Nominees may be graduates or former staff who have made a significant contribution to their community, state, or the country in their careers. Alumni must have graduated five years ago or more, and staff members must have resigned or retired at least five years ago. The deadline for nominations is September 15, 2019. Nomination letters should be emailed to IHSeducationfoundation@gmail.com .

The 2020 Census needs your help, and they will pay you for helping! The count of America starts in 2020. The bureau needs approximately 6,000 more temporary census workers in the Midlands. In Richland County it pays $15.50 per hour, in Lexington county $14.50 per hour, with .58 cents per mile reimbursement. Training sessions are August 13 at Irmo Library, 4 -7 pm, August 14 at the Goodwill on St. Andrews Road, 10 am-3 pm. Positions include a limited number of Office Clerks, Field Supervisors, and Office Supervisors. Interested applicants can apply at www.2020census.gov/jobs. Irmo and Chapin residents can recycle electronics, household hazardous waste, paper documents at Lexington High School’s Technology Center at 2463 Augusta Hwy, August 10 from 9 am until 1 pm.
