Errors and hitting woes plague Lexington County Blowfish in loss

The Lexington County Blowfish (4-3) surrendered just three runs, only of them earned, but it was not enough to pull out the win as they fell 3-2  against the Macon Bacon.

Michael Watson started the game on the mound for the Blowfish and breezed through the first inning. In the second, he ran into some slight trouble after Jarrett Jenkins’ line drive single to left field got him on base.

Fogarty was able to make it over to third following a pair of outs. With a routine ground ball hit over to Blake Martin, it seemed as if the Blowfish were going to make it out of the inning unscathed. However, Martin’s error allowed Jenkins to score and give the Bacon an early 1-0 lead.

Watson surrendered his first and only earned run of the contest in the top of the fourth as a result of a Tyler Fogarty run driven in by a Jake Larson single.

Down 2-0 and having yet to record a hit, the Blowfish were in desperate need of some hits. Sawyer Reeves led off the inning with a walk and a steal of second base. Dalton Reeves’ broken bat groundout to first moved Sawyer Reeves over to third base. Ashby Vining proceeded to lay down a well executed bunt into the shallow infield towards the pitcher. Sawyer Reeves read it perfectly and used his head start to score and beat the throw to the plate. The bunt was the Blowfish’s first hit of the game and also provided them with their first run.

The Blowfish weren’t finished in the fourth. Phillip Ard walked and Vining made his way over to third base. Thomas Powell drove Vining home and tied the game at two.

With Slaide Naturman pitching in relief of Watson, the Bacon regained the lead three innings later in the seventh after a Sawyer Reeves error brought in Benjamin Schechterman. It was the Bacon’s third run of the game and the second unearned run by the Blowfish pitching staff.

The Blowfish threatened to tie the game back up in the bottom of the eighth. Sawyer Reeves led the inning off with a walk and Warren Holzemer got hit by a pitch in the hands to put runners on first and second. Reeves and Holzemer stole second and third base with two outs but a Phillip Ard strikeout killed the rally.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Blowfish got the tying run in scoring position after Cooper Blauser ran out an infield single. The throw was wild and Blauser was awarded second base after the ball went out of play. Tristan Bissetta struck out swinging to end the game in the next at-bat.

The Bacon won the game 3-2 and left town with their first win against the Blowfish this season.

“Two errors in big spots and then with situational, timely hitting, we didn’t really come through,” Coach KC Brown said after the loss. “Normally, you got to do at least one of those or even both of those to get a win. We did neither tonight so that’s just how it goes sometimes.”
