Fake Certificates of Service

Do you own or operate a business? If so, South Carolina secretary of state Mark Hammond warns that you may be targeted by a new scam campaign.

The scammers write you claiming they are the “SC Certificate Service.” This is not a government agency.

The letters say you may need a “SC Certificate of Status” for loans, renewing business licenses, taxes and other purposes. The fee is $87.25, and the letter claims the certificate is issued by the Secretary of State.

Secretary Hammond wants you to know his office does not issue a “Certificate of Status.” Businesses on file with his office may request a Certificate of Existence for $10. Certificates of Existence are only available directly from the Secretary of State’s Office.

If you have received a letter like this, report it immediately the Secretary of State Business Filings Division at (803) 734-2158 or visit his website at sos.sc.gov .

The Secretary of State has issued a cease-and-desist letter to SC Certificate Service. He has referred the matter to law enforcement so it may be investigated.

Next: More to be wary about.
