Family, friends celebrate Mrs. Bessie’s Birthday

Posted

The line of cars circled the block as friends and families wished happy birthday to a special lady.

Bessie Odom Lowe of Cayce turned 80 June 1 and was surprised with a drive-by celebration Sunday, May 31.

The line of vehicles included family and friends, the Cayce Fire and Police Departments, Dianne Shirey, vice president of VFW post 8638 in Lexington and former SC Sen. Jake Knotts.

As they passed by they honked horns, waved and wished Lowe a happy birthday.

She was presented with roses by former Sen. Knotts whom the family designated as Grand Marshall of the parade.

Before retirement, Lowe served as assistant supervisor of the custodial staff at the Statehouse complex and was a licensed cosmetologist.

“She took pride in cleaning my office twice a week,” Sen. Knotts said. “She’s special.”

Her volunteer work includes Sunday School teacher, Girl Scout leader and a lifetime VFW member and past president of post 3695 of Cayce.
