Father faces trial in murder of 5 children

A Red Bank father’s trial in the killing of his 5 children is to start Monday.

Jury selection is to begin in Lexington for the death penalty murder trial of Timothy Jones Jr., 37.

Jones is accused of killing his children Merah, 8; Elias, 7; Nahtahn, 6; Gabriel, 2; and Elaine, 1 in their Red Bank home Aug. 28, 2014.

When he was arrested for DUI Sept. 6, 2014, Mississippi police found blood and notes describing how to mutilate bodies in his car.

He led police to his children’s bodies in Alabama where he admitted dumping them in plastic bags.

Defense attorneys say Jones will plead not guilty by reason of insanity.

He was returned to Lexington Sept. 11, 2014 to face murder charges here.

He has been detained at the Lexington County Detention Center.

Jones was born in Illinois and graduated from Mississippi State University, according to media reports. He was working for a Columbia computer company in 2014.

He married his wife Amber in 2004 and they divorced in 2013.

He alleged she was having an affair with a neighbor.

She did not adequately care for their children, he said, often leaving them alone to be with her boyfriend.

A judge gave Jones custody of the children.

Court records show Jones was seeing a therapist because of marital problems.

The SC Department of Social Services said it had received an abuse complaint against Jones.

That complaint was under investigation when the children were killed.

Amber Jones is suing DSS in Richland County claiming it was “grossly negligent” in protecting her children.

Her complaint details allegations of Jones’ substance abuse, criminal activity and domestic violence.
