What is a college football coach worth?

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney hauls in a modest $9.3 million a year.

Carolina head coach Will Muschamp gets an even more modest $4.2 million.

Clemson had another unbeaten regular season and won the ACC championship.

Muschamp’s team won only 4 games, lost 8 and failed to get a bowl bid.

Yet Muschamp is UofSC’s highest-paid employee.

His listed $1.1 million salary was a little more than a quarter of his overall $4.2 million compensation in the 1st year of a 6-year contract he received in 2018.

His Gamecocks are scheduled to play a revised 10-game, SEC-division-only season starting Sept. 26.

Clemson coach Swinney’s salary is listed at $245,000.

Yet he was the US’s topearning college football coach at $9.3 million annually, according to USA Today.

Swinney led his team to national championships in 2016 and 2018. The Tigers are to play 11 games beginning Sept. 12.

Both make more than their universities’ presidents.

The Charleston Post and Courier reported the UofSC board kept President Robert Caslen’s salary at $650,000, noting he and other administrators had taken 10% less pay to cut costs.

Caslen last year succeeded Harris Pastides, whose total annual pay in 2018 was nearly $1.15 million.

He is now an administrator making $375,031.

Clemson President James Clements was the 8th-high est paid Clemson employee at $318,781. His salary and taxable benefits last year totaled $994,296.

The 25,000-student Clemson has 807 employees making at least 6 figures. That’s 103 more than 2019 and 129 more than 2018.

Clemson announced it will furlough about half of its employees Sept. 1 to Dec. 31, and its highest paid athletics staff will take voluntary 10% pay cuts.

18.5% of UofSC’s 6,469 employees and more than 20% of Clemson’s 3,957 workers receive annual salaries of at least $100,000.
