Former Lexington basketball standout joins slew of Gamecocks in the transfer portal

Posted

Lexington’s Cam Scott is back in the transfer portal.

The former Wildcat standout previously entered the portal after his freshman season but withdrew his name and returned to the Gamecocks for his second year of college ball.

Scott redshirted this past season, appearing in no games for the team in 2025-26. He played in 26 games his freshman year, averaging three points and one rebound in about 10 minutes per game. He struggled shooting the ball, hitting about 28% of his shots and 18% from three.

Before he arrived at South Carolina, Scott was a four-star recruit out of Lexington High School.

He is one of the most decorated players in program history, winning consecutive South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year awards. He led the Wildcats to consecutive 20-win seasons and a 2024 SCHSL 5A State Championship as a senior.

Scott is the seventh Gamecock men’s basketball player to confirm their decision to enter the portal. The team will look very different next season, as another five players are out of eligibility.

Other key players in the portal include Jordan Butler, Eli Ellis, Christ Essandoko and Elijah Strong. Those out of eligibility include Meechie Johnson, Myles Stute and Mike Sharavjamts.

Counting transfers and ineligible players, South Carolina will lose all seven of its top scorers from 2025-26.

Head coach Lamont Paris is no stranger to rebuilding his rosters from scratch. It’s been par for the course during his time at South Carolina.

Entering this season, the Gamecocks retained just three players from 2024-25.

While the results haven’t paid off these past two seasons, Paris did lead the program to their first tournament appearance in seven years back in 2024.

Paris will be back in 2026-27 following a  pair of 12 and 13-win seasons. The school promised to invest more in the program to help the team build a competitive and complete roster.

So far, the Gamecocks have a commitment from the high school ranks and transfer portal, but there is still a lot of work to do.
