Former Lexington County Sheriff's Department employee charged

Posted

Shekinah Shyann Sade Brown, 24, a former administrative employee of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, has been charged with obtaining a signature or property under false pretense on Tuesday, April 1.

Brown was hired by the department in March 2023 and worked as a chemist in the laboratory. In October 2024, she resigned.

According to the arrest warrant, Brown did fraudulently and by false pretenses receive wages for hours she did not work. During an interview, Brown informed investigators she was working from home those days and hours.

After investigating the incident, SLED found that Brown did not have permission to work from home and she was paid for 378.70 hours more than she worked, totaling $10,568.19.

The press release stated Brown turned herself in on Tuesday morning at the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department headquarters. SLED agents arrested her.

Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said he referred the matter to SLED after he became aware of the alleged conduct related to the time sheets.

“There is an inherent trust that comes with working in the law enforcement profession,” Koon said in the press release. “Everyone who works here is held to a high standard and must be held accountable to maintain our professionalism and the standing we have within our very supportive community.”

Brown was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center and the case will be prosecuted by the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office.
