Former Springdale cop arrested

Accused of shooting juvenile with TASER

Posted

A former Springdale police officer was arrested Thursday for shooting a juvenile with a TASER.

The former officer was with the police force when the incident happened in late April but has since been fired.

He faces unlawfully discharging an X26 TASER device at the juvenile, an arrest warrant states.

Agents of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division June 3 said they arrested Carl Brooks Wilhelm, 36, in connection with the incident.

According to an arrest warrant, the juvenile’s mother dropped him off on April 21 so Wilhelm could take him to school. The arrest warrant states the juvenile interrupted a conversation Wilhelm was having with another officer. Wilhelm then reportedly unholstered his TASER device, pointed it at the juvenile and pulled the trigger — striking the boy in the left side of the head.

The juvenile was reportedly transported to the hospital where the probe was surgically removed.

The juvenile said in a forensic interview that the officer had pointed the TASER at him before to scare him.

The arrest warrant states that the incident was witnessed by two other officers with the Springdale Police Department.

“On 04/21/2021 an incident occurred at Springdale Police Department involving former officer, Carl Wilhelm,” the Springdale Police Department said Thursday by email. “Chief Richbourg requested SLED to investigate the incident, to ensure transparency and a non-bias investigation. Wilhelm is no longer employed with the Springdale Police Department.”
