The Freedom Truck rolled through South Carolina and stopped at Batesburg-Leesville High School on March 2 and 3, bringing its curriculum on the history of America’s founding.
The stop at the Lexington County high school was one of two stops in the state, with the other stop at Seven Oaks Elementary School in Columbia.
The truck is one of six semi-trucks making its way across all 48 states, according to Nick Bravo, an on-site manager. Bravo said the trucks started just a couple of weeks ago, first in Tampa, Fla.
Schedules are built each month, taking into account those who sign up through the organization’s website, freedom250.org.
An educator from Batesburg-Leesville High signed up for the truck to visit the campus.
All students had an opportunity to come out and see it. Each history class from the high school also came during their class times, and third and eighth graders from the nearby schools in Batesburg-Leesville also came to the truck.
“Educating [people on] the history about the 250th year [of America] is the goal of the truck,” Bravo said. “A lot of families use this as a tool for homeschooling.”
The content for the educational material was brought forth by PragerU and Hillsdale College, while funding for the trucks is provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, according to Bravo.
The trucks are making stops at schools, libraries and museums, and are open to state festivals, fairs and other locations, but Bravo said their priority is schools, libraries and museums.
The truck is decorated with illustrations and summaries about the country’s early history, while also having interactive quizzes and even an interactive screen for people to sign the Declaration of Independence.
The truck highlights a variety of key people, places and events that gave birth to American independence, according to the IMLS press release found on their website.
The goal of the trucks is to make history more accessible and reinforce patriotism for all Americans.
This project is in support of the Jan. 29, 2025, presidential executive order, “Celebrating America’s Birthday,” according to the IMLS press release.
People may visit freedom250.org for information regarding upcoming tour stops or to request a visit.
