Gilbert High School Student Accused of Threatening to Shoot Up Middle, Elementary School

A Gilbert High School student is accused of making threats against two other Lexington School District 1 campuses.

“The 14-year-old made a threatening statement that was overheard by another student Dec. 2 while riding the bus to school, according to the incident report,” reads a release from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. “The student who heard the threat told school administrators the student who was charged made a specific threat about wearing a trenchcoat the next day and going to the [Gilbert] elementary and middle school to shoot them up, according to the report.”

The district shared a message it sent out to Gilbert-area families on Dec. 6.

“Lexington District 1 immediately suspended the student and he faces expulsion,” it reads. “We are proud of the student who came forward to report the threat. This situation is another example of how we must work together to keep each other safe. We take threats seriously and take swift and stern action against those making threats against our schools.”

According to the incident report, which the department shared with the Chronicle, only one student has come forward saying they overheard the threats. Capt. Adam Myrick, the department’s public information officer, confirmed this reading of the incident report.

“We received no other statements from students on the bus to advise us that they had heard [the accused student] make the same statement,” the report says.

The incident report also states that the accused student denied making the threats.

“He advised that some people were picking on a friend of his and he said that he would hurt anybody who hurt his friends,” it reads. “He did not admit to making any comments about bringing a gun to school or shooting up the school. A search of his belongings yielded no contraband.”

The report mentions the accused student was caught with a knife in his backpack on campus last year.

“He advised that it was a pocket knife that he had accidentally left in his back pack the day before after taking the back-pack in the woods,” it states.

Sheriff Jay Koon is quoted in the news release praising the student who reported the threats.

“The student who came forward should be commended for doing the right thing,” Koon is quoted. “They heard something and reported all the details to someone who could immediately step in and take action to make sure everyone stayed safe.

“While there was never any imminent danger to students, teachers or anyone else on a campus, this is another example of how we and Lexington School District 1 share in the responsibility to protect those who learn and work at a school.”

The response to the alleged threats at Gilbert High occurred in close in time to two incidents of weapons on campus at District 1 schools.

The Sheriff’s Department charged two girls at Gilbert Middle School after an incident involving a knife that happened the same day.

On Nov. 29, three days earlier, White Knoll High School was locked down before sheriff’s deputies detained and charged two students it said had a gun and a knife.
