First Baptist Church of Gilbert celebrated its 25th Teachers' Appreciation Luncheon on Friday, July 31.
The church’s first luncheon was held in 2001, one week before school began. The first event was such a success that the church decided to continue it annually. This year’s was especially meaningful as organizers marked the event’s 25th year. The luncheon is held for all the teachers and staff of the four schools in Gilbert: Centerville Elementary School, Gilbert Elementary School, Gilbert Middle School and Gilbert High School.
This special community shows the church’s appreciation for the teachers and their hard work educating and caring for our children. Church member Peggy Meetze has coordinated the luncheon for the past 25 years. Pastor Mark Sanders of First Baptist commented, “The heart of our church is to share the love of Christ with our community. One of the best ways we can do that is by supporting and encouraging the teachers and staff of our Gilbert community schools.”
First Baptist Church of Gilbert Pastor Mark Sanders said organizers were honored to serve 349 teachers from the four schools. The church also gives away free school supplies to the teachers and more than 80 door prizes.
The teachers arrive at 11 a.m. from Centerville Elementary School and Gilbert Elementary School. When they arrive, they are greeted by church volunteers. From there, the teachers choose the supplies they need for their classrooms and register for door prizes. This year’s meal was catered by Magnolias in Pelion, and the delicious desserts were made by church members.
More than 31 First Baptist Church volunteers helped serve the meal, drinks and desserts for the teachers and staff. At 12:30 p.m., teachers and staff members arrived at Gilbert Middle School and Gilbert High School. On the Saturday after the Teachers Appreciation Luncheon, church members gather at the Gilbert Community Park for their annual Prayer Walk. Church members and others walk through the park to pray for the schools and teachers at each of the Gilbert schools.
