Volunteers are needed for the National Day of Service and Remembrance in honor of 9/11. This will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery on Saturday, Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Many volunteers from our community will be there with others to pay tribute to the first responders and service members who answered the call on that dreadful day. Volunteers will help clean the headstones of the veterans and beautify the cemetery of military members, veterans, first responders and their families. Registration is free but required. You can begin registering now at www.CarryTheLoad.org.
Congratulations to Gilbert High School teacher Jennifer Simmons. She recently was selected as a recipient of the 2026 Palmetto State Teachers Association Classroom Grant. This is the fifth year of the PSTA Classroom Grants created as part of the Reinvesting in Our Members Program. These grants are awarded annually to encourage and support PSTA members as they serve students across our state. Simmons is a theater teacher at GHS, and this grant will be used to purchase 10 pairs of tap shoes for her theater class. Simmons said the tap shoes will allow her to teach students basic tap skills to increase their knowledge of musical theater dance.
