A library card hits all the right notes! September is Library Card Sign-Up Month. Kelly R. Poole, director of the Lexington County Library, said libraries are for everyone and that this year’s theme reflects that message.
From making new friends at branch libraries across the county to finding programs for every interest, Lexington County’s public libraries offer a welcoming place for everyone. Be sure to sign up for a library card if you do not have one.
The Gilbert-Summit Branch Library has several new programs beginning in September. Master Gardeners will present “For the Birds” on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 11 a.m. Attendees will learn how to create a bird-friendly garden with plants, shrubs and trees that attract and support local birds. Once a month on Tuesdays at 4 p.m., Herbal Hour will bring together herbalists of varying experience levels to discuss seeds and plants. On Thursday, Sept. 17, at 3 p.m., junior explorers can enjoy Full STEAM Ahead, where students will take part in hands-on science and art challenges as they explore, create, and innovate. On Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 4 p.m., students will create custom “thinking putty” while exploring chemistry and texture. On Wednesday, Sept. 16, teens can enjoy a Jane Austen Tea Party. Period costumes are encouraged.
Donna Neel, director of the Gilbert-Summit Senior Center, said that this month, members from the Batesburg-Leesville, Lexington, Pelion, Pine Ridge, Swansea and Tri-City senior centers in Lexington County will attend an elder fraud presentation held in the Gilbert-Summit gymnasium. The FBI Columbia Field Office will host the elder fraud education presentation, which will cover recognizing common schemes, understanding tactical pressure, immediate presentation measures and reporting resources. Director Neel said members will also be entertained this month by Ron Morris with his magic card trick show, and Ronnie Hoover and Shannon and Rick will entertain members with their music.
Members will also have several arts and crafts classes and weekly Seniorcise exercise classes. If you are a senior age 60 and up and would like to join the Gilbert-Summit Senior Center, call 803-893-5745.
