Girl With Knife at Gilbert Middle, 3rd Weapon Found at Lexington District 1 Last Week

For the second time in a week, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department responded to a student with a weapon on a Lexington School District 1 campus.

Per a release from the department, two girls at Gilbert Middle School have been charged after “some cash was stolen and a knife was displayed” on Dec. 2.

“One of the girls refused to hand over a $20 bill that belonged to the other girl, according to deputies,” the release states. “The second student showed a knife and demanded the money back.”

The incident follows another at White Knoll High School on Nov. 29 in which a male student was found to be in possession of a gun on campus and a female student who was with him was found to have a knife. That situation triggered a lockdown that lasted for more than an hour.

A District 1 spokesperson told the Chronicle that they have no comment at this time on the close proximity of the two weapon incidents on campus or anything they will look to change or improve as a result.

Gilbert Middle’s principal, Kyle Meetze, sent a message to parents and guardians Friday, which the district shared with the Chronicle.

“I wanted to make you aware of an incident that occurred yesterday (Dec. 2) in the school’s gym during a physical education class,” it reads. “A student pulled a pocket knife from her pocket, pointed it at another student and quickly put away the knife.”

“A few hours later, the student reported the incident to administrators who, along with the school resource officer, immediately addressed the situation to ensure student safety.”

Meetze writes that while the staff does not believe the girl with the knife meant to harm the other student, weapons are strictly prohibited on school grounds, and she will be recommended for expulsion.

“I also ask you to remind your student(s) that our actions have consequences

— sometimes serious consequences. We expect our students to make good choices, respect each other, and follow our school and district rules and expectations,” the message reads. “If students have a concern, we encourage them to tell a teacher, counselor or administrator as quickly as possible so that they can help resolve the situation.

“Our students’ safety and well-being is our priority, and it is our goal that Gilbert Middle School continues to be a place where we all ‘Belong, Grow and Serve.’”

According to the Sheriff’s Department, the student with the knife at Gilbert Middle was charged with possessing a weapon on school grounds, while the second girl was charged with larceny for refusing to give back the money. Both have been released to the custody of their parents and will appear in Lexington County Family Court at an unspecified date.
