Golf Tips for 2022

Like last week, this golf message is very subjective.

Find a golf course or facility, then visit with family, friends or all alone. Swing at the ball, see if you can make it fly, and repeat.

The lesson today is simple: Consider not keeping score and just go hit the ball around. Swing at it and hit it again. Create golf shots, swing, go chase it, and hit again. You can do this alone or in fellowship.

I developed my heart for golf over the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.

Just a reminder: There are indoor options now for those who think the weather is severe or time is short, like The Players Club in downtown Columbia.

What’s nice about driving ranges and the Players Club option is it’s possible to get in a lot of swings in a small amount of time. An outing typically can take place within two hours, including drive time.

However, in my opinion, due to modern all weather gear, our tough weather is easily tolerable. This saying was narrowed years ago from my good friend Tripp Berry.

“Our poor weather here in the Midlands of South Carolina is still better than Scotland and Ireland’s average weather,” Berry said.

I completely agree, and here are some ideas on dressing when it’s cold, and even rainy:

Keep your head, hands and feet warm and dry if possible. Check the hunting stores for their solutions and recommendations on materials.

Personally, I go with rain suits on the outside, wool socks on my feet, gloves, and fleece or wool for stocking caps.

Last week, I started on last minute gift giving ideas, so this week might as well start with a popular cold-weather golf apparel garment. One of my favorites is golf mittens. You can find them online or likely at one of the golf shops nearby.

Rain gloves serve a warm purpose, so just be sure to get gloves for both left and right hands. Plenty of players now use gloves on each hand during the winter or when facing adverse weather conditions.

Speaking of embracing golf in tough weather conditions, each of these juniors played golf at LinRick this past Sunday afternoon during light rain, wind and temperatures in low 50s:

Tyson and Emery Erving, Andrew Patton, Bruce Beekman, Aria Hawkins, Graham Atkins, Evan & Carter Burnette, Lyles Herritage, Kierra & Brayden Lunde, Ka’dera Matthews, Hunter Cisco, Ethan Whitsett, Giovanni Calderon, Chancellor Chavous, Ethan Dubose, Jamal Riley Lillie Howell, Reagan Bolin.

It was the second Winter Tour On-Course Playshop before the actual season gets started. All these players had parents or grandparents carrying for them to assist with staying dry and warm.

To close this final golf column for the year, here are two more suggestions:

When purchasing golf gift certificates, which is a great gift idea, if you’re unsure what your golfer would like, check the conditions along with redemption variables associated with the purchase.

The second suggestion is to ponder your 2022 golf goals. Consider writing them down
