Good news for pond fans: dams may be rebuilt

Posted

Lexington Mayor Steve MacDougall is excited. “The Old Mill Pond is an iconic part of Lexington and we are anxious for its return,” he said. “I was fortunate enough to ski that pond as a youngster and cannot wait until it is back to full pool.” MacDougall confirmed that the Gibson and Old Mill dams which were washed away in October 2015 may be rebuilt next year. Both dams are expensive and town officials have been working on obtaining state and federal help with the replacement costs. Town Administrator Britt Poole said he did not know what privately-owned Old Mill Pond dam will cost. The town-owned Gibson Pond dam is estimated at up to $5 million, he said. Poole said 75% is to come from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The rest will be from the sale of government bonds.
