Another exciting week of high school basketball has passed, and with just two weeks to go, boys teams all over Lexington County will be scrambling to add to their win total.
Entering this week, two teams hold a firm grip on first place in their region. However, with multiple games to go, someone could sneak up and steal the top spot.
Gray Collegiate has two games of breathing room after picking up its second win over North Augusta this season. The War Eagles made it their mission to take the region title in 2026 after losing it to the Yellow Jackets in 2025.
In the first season of head coach Dion Bethea’s return, Gray is off to a (10-0) region start and (18-2) overall.
The team began this week with four region games left, including two against fellow Lexington County programs. Gray has every right to be confident down the stretch, with their last four games coming against the four lowest teams in the standings.
Only North Augusta has a chance to catch the War Eagles. Brookland-Cayce and Midland Valley are battling for third place, but both sit four games behind Gray and have already lost twice to the team.
Dutch Fork currently has the lead in the race for the 5A Region 4 title. The entire region is composed of local teams, meaning no matter what happens, Lexington County will win at least one region championship.
The Silver Foxes hold a one-game advantage over their rival, Irmo. Should the pair even their record before their second meeting, the Yellow Jackets would rise to first place, having beaten Dutch Fork earlier in the season.
Irmo and Dutch Fork are set to meet again in the season finale. That game could decide the region champion or even force a third game between the two to decide the champion.
The Silver Foxes are no strangers to region title games. Dutch Fork beat River Bluff in one last season after splitting their regular-season meetings. Just like this year, the Silver Foxes lost their first meeting with the Gators.
Outside of the top teams, the rest of Lexington County will be looking to add wins and better their chances for the postseason. Not every team will qualify, making these last few games extremely important.
Teams safely in the postseason race can also better their chances at hosting a playoff game or two.
The boys basketball regular season will officially end on Feb. 13. Most local teams will play their last game on Feb. 12, with the 13th being for necessary region deciding games.
Playoffs officially tip off on Feb. 16.
