Guthrie’s Chicken, known for its fried chicken fingers, is opening its first location in the Carolinas. This grand opening will take place on April 22 in Lexington, South Carolina.
Located at 2404 Mineral Springs Road near the section of Sunset Boulevard where Lowe's, Kohl's and Ulta Beauty are, the Guthrie’s Chicken brand has actually been around for 55 years. Owner Hal Guthrie opened a drive-in restaurant in 1965. In 1978, Guthrie told his wife and four children they would open a new restaurant, according to its website.
In 1982, Guthrie’s oldest son convinced his father to open a location in Auburn. Together, they renovated an existing building. Due to the size of the building, the family decided to remove some food items. The decision was made to only serve chicken fingers, steak sandwiches and hamburgers.
Shortly after, steak sandwiches and hamburgers were taken off the menu. According to Guthrie’s website, they were the first restaurant to serve chicken fingers only.
The restaurant has since flourished, opening new locations around Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
A popular menu item is the “Gut” box, which includes "Golden Fried Chicken Fingers, Crispy Fries, Creamy Cole Slaw, Buttery Texas Toast [and] Guthrie’s Signature Sauce."
Guthrie’s signature sauce was created by his children after holding a competition between them to see who could make the best sauce.
