Hall of Famer, Olympic medalist visits White Knoll

Wrestling is more than just an avocation for Nate Carr Sr.

From to winning 3 national and 2 Big 8 titles at Iowa State and an Olympic bronze to earning induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the sport has proven beneficial in many ways for he and his family.

It’s that commitment and passion for wrestling Carr looked to convey Friday to participants of a 2-day training camp at White Knoll High School.

The current associate director of the Cyclone Regional Training Center in Iowa was an invited guest of longtime friend and returning Timberwolves’ head coach Kevin Emily.

“It’s a saying ‘When you love wrestling more than winning, eventually you win,” he said. “And I think that’s important and I think that the truth of it is if you’re going to be a great coach or great champion which I believe Kevin Emily is, what’s more important than the outcome is what they become.”

More than just teaching techniques and refining skills among the 15 campers in attendance, Carr focused on developing “the right mindsets” and learn to overcome challenges without being discouraged.

“It’s almost like life, you’ve got to figure some things out,” he said. “Of course, no strategy, no victory. So that’s what I want to bring here.”

Carr and his family have personally experienced the benefits of wrestling. He and his 4 brothers hold the NCAA record as All-Americans and Nate Jr. was a 3-time state champion and won a junior college national title.

Carr also pointed out how wrestling teaches skills which translate into other life skills.

“Most of the Navy SEALs that are successful are wrestlers,” Carr said. “I just think all of life is wrestling.”
