Chapin now has a Commercial Historic District.

The district’s 12 structures are in the Beaufort Street and Clark street area.

They include commercial buildings built from 1901 to 1969.

The schpr.sc.gov site says the first period of economic growth occurred from 1901- 1922 as a result of Chapin being a railroad town.

Chapin experienced more growth from 1940-1969.

The old Chapin Dispensary, built in 1908, and the artist, Judy Bolton Jarrett’s store, are just 2 historic commercial listing structures.

The Chapin Historical Association, lead by John Thomason, JJ Casey and Pat Lewandowski, officially received the Historic District’s listing from the National Register of Historic Places October 17, 2019.

The historic district documentation is now officially on schpr.sc.gov.

The family of Martin Chapin, founder of Chapin, has given the association a box of treasured heirlooms to be displayed at Chapin Town Hall.

The Chapin Women’s Club donated money for plaques on the buildings that qualified for the National Registry.

“This is a necessary step to safe guard Chapin’s history and heritage of our founding family. It would also create awareness of, and pride in, our community’s beginning,” said Thomason.
