History Park has busy spring planned

The 12,000 Year History Park will kick off its spring season Mar. 7 with 2 tours.

The 1st tour at 10 am will take visitors to Fort Congaree. Along the way, the guide will talk about 18th century life, trade and relations with the Native American people. It will also teach about the origins of the fort and the deerskin trade with the natives.

At 1 pm, a tour of the Civil War Battles site at Congaree Creek will begin. The tour will teach visitors about how a small group of Confederate soldiers, mainly from Tennessee and Mississippi, tried to hold off General William T. Sherman’s army from destroying Columbia.

One highlight is the Confederate Earthworks, which are the most well preserved in the country. Newly installed educational signs along the paths will enhance the experience.

In addition to the regular tours, the history park has scheduled the 2nd Walk to Fort Congaree for Mar. 21. The event was a big success last year, and this year there will be even more to do and see.

There will also be a Native American Lifeways program and Nature Discovery Day.

There is an amazing amount of history in the area around the 12,000 Year History Park. Whether you are a lifelong resident or a newcomer, the park offers some great family fun and learning opportunities.

The 12,000 year history park is located at 1120 Fort Congaree Trail, Cayce.
