HOME FOR ROUND 1

With playoff positions set, most teams will rest in Week 11

Call Week 11 the calm before the storm.

With many Chronicle Country teams opting not to use the extra week allotted by the S.C. High School League for schools to make up Week 4 games postponed due to Hurricane Florence, the end result is a light schedule of four games.

This should lead to several well-rested teams going into the post-season starting Nov. 8.

Meanwhile, expect those schools who play this weekend to field teams with junior varsity players. With the 8-quarter rule which limits their opportunites to play on Friday nights, this is a golden opportunity for fans to see tomorrow’s stars on a varsity night.

Some teams secured their respective positions this past weekend. Irmo was sent to a first-round road game at Berkeley by the unconventional coin flip which dropped it to third place in Region 4-4A following a 27-9 loss to Spring Valley.

Other teams like River Bluff and Airport secured first-round home games with victories which clinched second place in their respective regions.

In both cases, the Gators and Eagles enjoyed dramatic turnarounds after losing seasons a year ago.

The full S.C. High School League brackets are expected to be made available Saturday at www.schsl.org .

TEAM OF THE WEEK - Airport High School

After a 2-2 start, the Eagles have won five of their last six games and avenged the Aug. 24 loss to Brookland-Cayce to earn a share of the Region 5-4A title.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Hunter Helms (Gray Collegiate)

The War Eagles’ quarterback threw for over 400 yards and 5 touchdowns against C.A. Johnson.

WEEK 10 GRIDIRON GIANTS

Brandon Caughman (Airport) - 136 passing yards, TD; 2 rushing TDs Nanders Lawrence (Airport) - 145 rushing yards Roger Pedroni (Chapin) - 330 passing yards, 3 TDs Xavier Short (Chapin) - 5 receptions, 129 yards, 2 TDs James Wells (Chapin) - 20 tackles Sam Greer (Chapin) - 12 tackles Ty Olenchuk (Dutch Fork) - 14-16 passing, 294 yards, 6 TDs (ties school record) Jalin Hyatt (Dutch Fork) - 7 receptions, 162 yards, 3 TDs Kyzer Samuel (Gray Collegiate) - 3 interceptions Angel Camerena (Irmo) - 3 field goals Akeem Nicholas (Lexington) - 259 rushing yards, TD Cal Herndon (Lexington) - 187 total yards, 2 TDs Braden Walker (River Bluff) - 179 rushing yards, 2 TDs

NORTH-SOUTH ALL-STARS

Chronicle Country will be well-represented at Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach for the Dec. 15 Touchstone Energy Cooperative North vs. South Bowl. Competing on the North side are defensive lineman Dallaz Corbett and wide receiver Josh Doctor (both of Gray Collegiate). On the South side are quarterback Reed Charpia (Brookland-Cayce), linebacker James Wells (Chapin), wide receiver Gage Zirke and linebacker Jordan Springs (both of Dutch Fork), linemen Darrius Bell and Jacob Burgess (both of Gilbert) and linebacker George Storm (Pelion). The South assistant coaching staff includes head coaches Tom Knotts (Dutch Fork) and Chad Leaphart (Gilbert) and assistants Mitch Strange (Chapin) and David Smith (Pelion). Former River Bluff assistant coach Dwayne Garrick, now head coach at Barnwell, is the South’s head coach.

100-WIN CLUB

Dutch Fork head football coach Tom Knotts picked up his 100th win at the school in the 62-0 victory over White Knoll. The Silver Foxes have won 20 straight games, both overall and in region play, and completed a second undefeated regular season in 3 years.
