Talking Points

Last minute Valentine’s Day shoppers may want to pump the brakes.

New WalletHub data shows not everyone wants their sweetheart to spend a lot on gifts.

The personal finance website found that:

• 46% of people would break up with their significant other if they spent irresponsibly.

• 4 in 10 people say irresponsible spending is a bigger turnoff than bad breath.

Despite this, WalletHub estimates Americans will spend $10.5 billion just on jewelry, flowers and candy this Valentine’s Day.

On everything, we’ll spend $27.4 billion for the holiday.

The survey also found:

• The average person will spend $196.30 on Valentine’s Day.

• Men are nearly 3 times more likely than women to think a Valentine’s Day gift is worth going into credit card debt. They’ll spend $291 on average, compared to $106 spent by women.

• 51% of people say they would not marry someone with bad credit.

• 9 million marriage proposals are made each Valentine’s Day.
