How our lawmakers pick regulators

I’m glad to be a new Chronicle subscriber although living in Edgefield County. I appreciate your commitment to examining issues and telling the truth. After reading The Nerve’s news story, I read your Opinion piece addressing this faulty, political pawn deal of Elliott Elam of Lexington appointed to the open Public Service Commission position. The Nerve, the newsletter of the government watchdog SC Policy Council, reported that Patty Carson, mayor of the town of North, and Bruce Cole of Forest Acres, president of a Columbia think tank and a PSC nominee last year, said no legislative Public Utility Review Committee members gave no specific reasons for rejecting them. The Nerve reported that 2 rejected candidates for the congressional District 2 seat, which covers Lexington County, are questioning why the legislatively controlled PURC voted to find them “not qualified.” At the Chronicle, you feel the pulse of the state legislature, turning your flashlight to the backroom deals which hold back our state from a legislature truly representing voters, citizens and utility ratepayers. House Speaker Jay Lucas and Senate President Harvey Peeler rule by fiat, as did their predecessors, which is exactly by the design of Pitchfork Ben Tillman’s 1895 Constitution and has not been changed. May God protect you, give you strength and health to continue to tell the truth. The Lexington County Chronicle is a fine newspaper with its timely articles, editorials, opinions, and neighborhood news. May God help us, the voters, citizens and ratepayers of South Carolina, too!
