The German and Swiss-German settlers who came here in the 18th century brought many of their traditions and characteristics with them and passed them down to their descendants. One tradition found here in the 18th and 19th centuries was planting using the German calendar instead of the English almanac because it gave the signs for the weather.
Another tradition still around today is the practice of cakewalks. Although those of German descent were said to have been honest they were reluctant to testify in court. They were also often described as thrifty. One commentator reported that they “lived cheaply” except for buying calico, ribbons, tobacco, and liquor. JR Fennell is Lexington County Museum director.
