The hurricane holiday is over, and Florence’s arrival in the Carolinas caused quite a mess. Thankfully she downgraded into a category 1 hurricane, then down to a tropical depression. Chap-in had a few trees down, but no real damage.

Another devastating hurricane hit September 15, 1752, 266 years ago. The Upton was a 180-ton ship carrying 400 German immigrants from Rotterdam to Charleston. The Charleston Gazette advertised for workers to help dig the ship out of the marsh. What a wild hurricane ride they must have endured!

What can you do with all that bottled water? Chapin residents can drop off bottled water, non-perishable food, cleaning supplies and toiletries at town hall. All the supplies will be taken to the Lexington Sheriff’s Department. They have teamed up with Serve & Connect, Harvest Hope Food Bank and the SC Police Chiefs Association to collect donations for the hard-hit Pee Dee.

Since we, in the Midlands, know what its like to experience a flood, we understand what the residents in the flood zones are going through. Horry County firefighters came and helped us in 2015, so our Lexington County firefighters have been dispatched to help those in Horry County.

If you enjoy plays, the Chapin Theater company is presenting “Things Mother Taught Me” September 28-29 and October 4-6 at 8 p.m., with matinees September 30 and October 7 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. Performances are at Legion Post 193, 102 Lexington Ave. For information, call 800-838-3006

I forget to check the oil in my van and never check any other fluids, I am thankful for my auto mechanic husband! However, adulthood means taking care of your vehicle. The Irmo Library Adulting 101 class on October 8, 6 p.m., is about car care. Do you know where the windshield fluid goes? Do you know how to check the oil? A trained automotive technician will be there to help you learn these skills and more!
