I ate my peas and collards this year!

AROUND LEXINGTON COUNTY

Did you eat your peas and collards on New Year’s Day? The old saying is that they will bring you good health and prosperity in the new year.

Our family enjoyed our peas and collards along with the usual pork, corn muffins and sweet potatoes.

Some thoughts on the new year:

Ralph Waldo Emerson says “Write it down on your heart that everyday is the best day of the year.”

J.P. Morgan says, “The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide you’re not going to stay where you are.”

Thomas Jefferson says, “I like the dreamers of the future better than the history of the past.”

We make our resolutions to exercise more, maintain a healthy diet and get more organized. Whatever we resolve to do, let’s hope that we can accomplish our goals. One of mine would be to conquer all this new technology.

Football is quite the topic as our Clemson Tigers will take on the LSU Tigers in the football championship game Jan 13 at 8 pm in New Orleans. Many folks from our area will be attending or planning watch parties at home with friends.

There will be a National Championship Watch Party at Second Wave Coffee Shop, 529 S. Lake Dr., Lexington. Check it out. It will feature a large outdoor screen with heated seating, a fire pit, and refreshments.

There are events coming up that we don’t want to miss.

The Shepherd’s Center Adventures in Learning winter classes run January 23 to February 27. Call 803-359-6838, ext., 110, or visit www.sclex.org for information.

The Friends of the Lexington County Museum will hold the annual gala at the Lexington Museum Complex. “Celebrating the 50th Birthday of the Museum” is the theme. Get your tickets now by calling the museum at (803) 359-8369.

St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 403 Park Rd., Lexington, will host Rose Wilkins’ Famous Chicken Bog Feb. 7, 5:30-8 pm. Plates are $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. You may eat in or take out. Proceeds will benefit the Altar Guild and church youth.

Anne Bull reports

that the Lexington County Library will have family story time on Saturdays at 11 am through May 30. The program features children’s literature, songs and rhymes.

She also reports that Meals on Wheels is looking for volunteers in the Lexington area. Call 804-356-5111 for information or to volunteer.

The next tea party at the Lexington Main Library is Jan. 12 at 2:30 pm. There will be a short lecture in addition to a full English High Tea. Fancy hats are encouraged.

Congratulation to many couples celebrating anniversaries, including Charlie and Lessie Polk, 40 years; Bernard and Suzanne Compton, 50 years; Mike and Sydney Gatch and Jimmy and Kay Berry, 46 years.
