Indigent memorial and burial service

Posted

A public funeral service was held for 25 decedents Tuesday.

Many of these individuals had no known relatives or friends.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher conducted the 1st public memorial and burial service at the County of Lexington Cemetery, located at 729 S. Lee Street, Batesburg.

The cemetery was created to accommodate the growing need for a final resting place for indigent and unidentified decedents in Lexington County.

The decedents were honored and their cremated remains interred April 20.

Unfortunately, a public ceremony could not be held last year due to the covid-19 pandemic and related safety concerns.

Coroner Fisher and her staff respectfully laid to rest 43 individuals in 2020. Any known family members or friends were notified afterward and invited to pay their respects privately.
