The Town of Irmo recently approved a $10,500 contract with South Carolina Career Kids to provide the Safety Town program hosted at three elementary schools during the upcoming school year.
The schools are Irmo Elementary, H.E. Corley Elementary and Dutch Fork Elementary.
“This is one of the greatest programs,” Mayor Bill Danielson said. “We have backed this program since day one, and it’s a budgeted item.”
South Carolina Career Kids offers children the opportunity to explore various careers through interactive events and programs and collaborate with professionals in different career fields.
“Our mission is to begin career exploration at a formative age so that South Carolina’s future leaders and future workforce are exposed to future opportunities right here in the Palmetto State,” the organization's website states.
The organization created the Safety Town program, which includes pop-up field trips to schools where students get to engage in safety-related topics. During the event, students will learn safety skills including stranger-danger awareness, demonstrations, hands-on activities and other safety topics.
Children will rotate through safety stations to learn about traffic signals and crosswalks, fire drills and more, with presentations from professionals, including firefighters, police officers, paramedics and community safety educators.
S.C. Career Kids also offers an after-school program called Career Club, where students learn about different careers through hands-on activities and engaging with professionals.
The organization announced its partnership with the Irmo Chapin Recreation Center in hopes of expanding services to all students in the Lexington-Richland County School District Five.
In fall 2024, Irmo Elementary, Saxe Gotha Elementary, Chapin Elementary, Nursery Road Elementary and Oak Pointe Elementary served as locations for the after-school program.
Ballentine Elementary and Piney Woods Elementary hosted the after-school program in February and March of 2025.
The Irmo Town Council will gather on Tuesday, July 1, at 6 p.m. for a council workshop at the Irmo Municipal Building, located at 7300 Woodrow St. in Irmo.
The next regularly scheduled town council meeting will be on Tuesday, July 15, at 6 p.m. at the same location.
