Irmo, Gilbert stars light up scoreboard to win Athlete of the Week

Posted

The fall sports season continues to excite in Lexington County, following a week of more wins, big scores and great performances.

This week’s Athlete of the Week winners stuffed the stat sheet with points as their teams earned hard-fought wins. The two players hail from Irmo and Gilbert. They are very experienced and used to pressure, excelling when the lights are bright.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.

Britton Davis

Irmo quarterback Britton Davis diced up the opposing defense as Irmo cruised to a 60-13 win over Wilson.

The Yellow Jacket junior threw for five touchdowns and over 200 yards in pouring rain. Davis spread the love around, finding five different pass catchers for a touchdown.

Davis is in his first year as Irmo’s starting quarterback. He was the primary backup last season, but got some reps early in the year and during certain situations.

Now, as the guy, Davis has Irmo out to a (3-1) start this season. Since the season-opening loss to Rock Hill, Irmo and Davis have played much better.

The Yellow Jackets will look for Davis to continue his upward trajectory as they try to be the last 4A team standing in the state.

Gabby Esposito

Gilbert volleyball’s Gabby Esposito helped her team get back in the win column and snap a three-match losing streak.

The senior was the team’s go-to offensive weapon last week. In a pair of wins over Aiken and Camden, Esposito combined for 58 kills, 26 digs, five aces, four assists and three blocks.

Esposito’s play has elevated in recent weeks. She went the first seven games without a double-digit kill total, but has surpassed that mark in each of the last four matchups.

Her play has helped the Indians start to turn the corner after starting the season 0-5). Gilbert is since (3-3).
