The countdown to the fall sports postseason is on as Lexington County teams play their final few regular season contests.
With so few games to go, wins become even more valuable for teams looking to improve their playoff positioning. As the crunch begins, teams are leaning more on their stars to shine.
This week’s Athlete of the Week winners hail from Irmo and River Bluff. They both led their teams to crucial wins by sharing the spotlight and getting the ball to their teammates.
Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.
Irmo quarterback Britton Davis helped the Yellow Jackets pick up their second straight win last week with a 56-14 win over Midland Valley.
Davis accounted for four total touchdowns, three passing and one rushing. He was 13-of-17 for the night, passing for 245 yards. He rushed for another 39 yards.
The junior and the Yellow Jackets have dealt with hot-and-cold play this season, but the past two games have looked very promising. Through eight games, Davis is completing over 50% of his passes, throwing for over 1,300 yards and 17 touchdowns to go with seven interceptions.
As Irmo gets ready for postseason play, the team will need Britton to keep up his current play to make another deep run.
River Bluff freshman Faith Jodie helped the volleyball team clinch its second-straight region title by helping the team pick up a pair of wins over White Knoll and Lexington.
The Gators have had a strong bounce back in the region season after a rocky start in the non-region slate. River Bluff went 7-1 in conference contests and 12-15 in all others.
Jodie has carved a sizable role with the team in her first varsity year. This year she leads the Gators in assists and is also third in aces and third in digs. In 77 sets played, Jodie accounted for 434 assists.
Against White Knoll, she finished with 24 assists and six digs. Against Lexington, she got 38 assists. 15 digs, three kills and an ace.
