Longtime Public Services Director Whitt Cline for the Town of Irmo now has a park named after him.
Whitt Cline Community Park, formerly Irmo Town Park, is located at 7330 Carlisle St.
“It is a great honor and privilege to name our former Irmo Town Park after Whitt Cline," Mayor Bill Danielson said. "Whitt has been a dedicated servant to this community for over two decades. His expertise in managing the beauty of our parks and public spaces is unparalleled, and his passion will now be remembered here forever."
Now retired, Cline worked for the town for 25 years, and the new park sign was installed on April 15.
"I appreciate everybody that’s here tonight," Cline said during the dedication ceremony. "I’ve got friends, work colleagues, and family here. I consider myself a very lucky man tonight. We’ve got a good thing going here in Irmo, and I expect it to keep going."
The press release from the town calls Cline “a steadfast guardian of Irmo’s natural resources.” It also notes that his leadership led to Irmo receiving its first Tree City USA designation in 2009.
“Whitt’s dedication to the beautification of our Town is unmatched," Town Administrator Jim Crosland said in the press release. "Every park you visit, and every tree planted along Woodrow Street, is a testament to his work."
The renaming comes after the unanimous adoption of a resolution by the town council in March.
"He was a magician in turning basic spaces into works of art," Former Town Administrator Courtney Dennis said. "Under his leadership, every street reflected his pride. He elevated the town and kept our community blooming year-round."
