In previous columns, I’ve told you about my battle with interstitial cystitis. The health of your bladder and mine is relevant. How often have you thought about taking care of your body? Many readers can’t answer this question. Have you heard, “What you put into your body is the performance you will get?” This is true. Our bladders are no different than any other organ. They require care and attention. Following these simple steps will help to keep your bladder healthy.
1. Include exercise in your everyday routine. You may take a walk. Give yourself at least 30 minutes.
2. Women may practice Kegels. These are pelvic floor muscle exercises. More about them at https://www.nafc.org/kegelThey are one of the best ways to improve and maintain bowel and bladder functions. Perform them correctly to strengthen muscles to help support your bladder.
3. Diet, diet, diet is key. Make sure that you are staying away from anything acidic as this will irritate your bladder. No carbonated drinks or alcohol as well.
4. Make sure to urinate before and after any sexual activities. Don’t hold your urine. This can lead to a urinary tract infection, because it increases bacteria build up.
