South Carolinians face the 6th-highest average student debt in the nation.

The website Vox reported 45 million US students and their parents owe $1.7 trillion in student loans.

That’s an average of $37,777 a student.

It’s $523 lower than the average student loan debt in SC - $38,300.

Student loan forgiveness has received a political push in the latest pandemic stimulus bill.

The law passed by Congress inlcudes student loan forgiveness to be considered tax free.

But it’s not yet known if Congress will forgive any student loan debt.

President Biden wants $10,000 in forgiveness.

Some Democratic Party House members want Biden to write an executive order wiping out $50,000 for each indebted student.

So far he has refused to do that, urging Congress to act instead.
