AROUND LEXINGTON COUNTY

It was Super Bowl Sunday and many made it a late night watching the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers clash in Super Bowl

54.

The Chiefs came out the winners in an exciting finish, with many sleepy eyes on Monday.

In keeping with the theme, churches made it Souper Bowl Sunday as they received donations in Soup Pots to help feed the hungry.

The Lexington Network of Female Executives met at Catch 22 last Tuesday and were privileged to have a prominent Lexington leader speak to the group. Lexington County Chronicle Editor Emeritus Jerry Bel-lune shared with members a bit of the 150-year history of the local newspapers.

Civil War veteran Godfrey “Uncle Josh” Harman founded The Lexington Dispatch at the urging of local community and business leaders in 1870. He merged the competing Lexington News into the newspaper early in the 20th century to become The Dispatch-News.

The Bellune family bought The Dispatch-News in 2001 and merged it with their newspaper, the Lexington County Chronicle.

They also launched the weekly Lake Murray Fish Wrapper and the annual Explore Lexington County Guide to give the county more news and information and their advertisers greater marketing reach. The Bellune family believes their newspaper company is the longest continuously operating businesses in Lexington County. They and their staff are celebrating 150 years of service to the county and its people this year. This is another birthday to celebrate!

Robin Bowers, director of Missions Lexington, sends a holiday recap:

At Christmas, 924 children received gifts from Mission Lexington’s Christmas Shop, run by volunteers. The gifts were collected throughout the year in the Donation Center and also from local churches, individuals, law enforcement and businesses. Families were able to shop for the gifts that were best for their children. The mission also provided 1,040 holiday baskets, complete with turkeys or hams. That’s an increase of almost 200 more than were given out last year.

Mission Lexington is at 216 Harmon St., Lexington, and gratefully accepts donation of food, clothing and hygiene items. They are in most need of things like shampoo, deodorant, tooth brushes, toothpaste, and food items such as canned tuna, breakfast bars, grits, oatmeal, cereals, and pet food.
