It’s really the dog days of summer

We’re in the “dog days of summer” and it has been quite a doggie season. Mom and I went to the pound to get a puppy friend for her lonely Great Dane. Rocky is enjoying playing with the puppy.

This week I had two beautiful huskies show up early one morning and run circles around the chicken coops. The chickens squawked loudly and ran in panicked circles. It was an early morning dog and chicken circus. Later that morning, we found the owners, and it was a happy reunion for all!

The Chapin Labor Day was a success despite the hot weather. With 99 parade floats, over 120 vendors, live music and a cool car show, it was a fun day for all. A big thank you to Nichole Burroughs at Chapin Town Hall and to her volunteer team for doing such an incredible job organizing this 38-year-old festival.

Here are some indoor activities to help endure the humid outdoors. The Lexington County Master Gardner’s program at the Ir-mo Library is Sept. 19, 1-2 p.m. The topic is growing hydrangeas like your grandmother. Call 803-798-7880 for information. Chapin Library is having pottery night September 20, 6-7:30 p.m. with local artist Katy Brown to demonstrate the creation of beautiful pottery. All materials are provided. To register call 803-345-5479.

For a fun adventure, The Splash and Dash at Saluda Shoals competition is for you! Teams of 2 or 3 competitors run two miles, Bike 4 miles and paddle 1 mile along the scenic trails of the park. The race is September 15, at 8:30 a.m. Paddles are provided. Bring your off-road bike and helmet. All ages are allowed with an adult 18 years or older on the team. Call 213- 2062 or email bsenn@icrc.net for information.

On a funny note, September 1 was Emma Nutt Day. She was the first woman telephone operator in 1878 and stayed at the job for 33 years. Emma said she was “very thankful that my first name was not Imma.” Yes, Emma, we are thankful for you!
