Three preseason football kickoffs set for this weekend

Chronicle Country fans will get their first true test of high school football action this weekend.

A total of four preseason scrimmages are scheduled to take place in Lexington and Richland Counties, two each on Friday and Saturday.

JOE TURBEVILLE JAMBOREE

WHERE: W.C. Hawkins Stadium in Irmo WHEN: 5:30 p.m. Friday

The third edition of the Jamboree, dedicated to the memory of the late Irmo and Spring Valley head football coach features teams from Richland, Lexington and Fairfield counties.

The opening game pits Wade Hampton against W.J. Keenan. It’s followed at 6:15 p.m. by Richland Northeast against Swansea, Gray Collegiate Academy will face Fairfield Central at 7 p.m. Dutch Fork goes against Ridge View at 7:45 p.m. and Irmo meets Airport in the 8:30 p.m. finale.

LEXINGTON CTY. SPORTSARAMA

WHERE: Lexington High School WHEN: 6 p.m. Friday

It’s a once a year opportunity for Lexington County’s seven S.C. High School League football teams to share the same field.

The first game kicks off at 6 p.m. when defending Region 5-3A champion Gilbert faces Chapin for 2, 12-minute quarters. Pelion and White Knoll will meet next, followed by River Bluff and Batesburg-Leesville and closing with host school Lexington vs. Mid-Carolina.

AUN & MCKAY KICKOFF CLASSIC

WHERE: Perry Woolbright Field in Chapin WHEN: 6 p.m. Saturday

The annual event helps participating schools raise funds for their respective athletic departments.

White Knoll will face Mid-Carolina at 6 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. with Lexington versus Airport, Spring Valley and Newberry at 8 p.m. and Chapin against Pelion in the 9 p.m. nightcap.

The same night, Gray Collegiate will face Lower Richland at the Sportsarama now taking place at Charles W. Johnson Stadium on the campus of Benedict College.

The Sportsarama was moved to the school from District Stadium at W.J. Keenan High School. Construction is not expected to be completed until the end of August.
