Acid reflux and drinking too much alcohol can damage the cell lining of your throat (esophagus).

This can lead to cancer of the esophagus and Barret’s esophagus, a condition that causes difficulty swallowing.

Acid Reflux

Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid goes up into the esophagus over time this causes irritation and damage to the cells. Acid reflux can be controlled with medications and sometimes surgery which prevents damage to your esophagus.

LIFESTYLE FACTORS

Any type of alcohol can cause damage to the cells in the esophagus and the more alcohol you drink, the higher risk you will have for developing cancer. Smoking nicotine and obesity increase your risk for many types of cancers, including esophageal cancer.

Barret’s esophagus and esophageal cancer are conditions that occur after many years of damage to your esophagus. Managing your acid reflux and drinking less alcohol, avoiding nicotine, and maintaining a healthy weight can decrease your risk for these conditions. Talk to your healthcare provider about medication management for these conditions.
