Did dirty politics enter the campaign for a vacant Lexington County Council seat?
Charli Wessinger, a Republican candidate in the District 6 race in Chapin, suspects so.
A recent mailer was sent to Republican primary voter addresses that was a false endorsement by a group calling itself, “Democrats for Charli,” her campaign staff said.
The Lexington County Democratic Party responded, “We do not now, nor have we ever endorsed Republicans in their primaries.”
“These mailers did not come from us. If you have received one of these in the mail, or have any information regarding where they are actually coming from, please message us or email jmlcdpchair@gmail.com.”
The return address on the mailer is the Publix at the Chapin Crossing shopping center.
This mailer also fails to state by whom the mailer was paid and used stamps versus a postal permit number.
Someone also posted a sign reading, “Democrats for Charli” on land owned by Broad River-Friarsgate, LLC, which is a Mungo-owned company.
“This was a desperate attempt to discredit Charli’s values and to mislead and manipulate voters with false information,” her campaign staff said.
Many voters were reportedly angry that anyone would violate federal laws while implying voters are not smart enough to know the difference.
“Actions like these erode the sanctity of the election process and perpetuate a distrust of the political process among citizens,” her campaign staff said.
