Pine Ridge Middle School students' first day back in school after spring break is also their first day back since the April 17 bus accident that killed one student and left many others injured.

Lexington County School District Two schools have been on spring break; classes resumed on April 28. According to a press release, district counselors, social workers and psychologists are available for teachers, staff, students and families and will be available as long as needed.

"This process began on Friday, April 18, the first day of spring break, when Pine Ridge Middle families, teachers, staff, bus drivers, and others were invited to come to the school and talk and reconnect with each other following the April 17 bus incident," the district told the media.

The district is additionally supporting those who require further medical evaluation and treatment after the accident.

“Amid the difficult days since April 17, we have been reminded time and again how fortunate we are to be part of such a supportive community,” the release read. “From families and employees in Lexington Two and surrounding school districts, to businesses and churches, elected officials and local governments, law enforcement agencies and health care providers, and many others, our community has been a constant source of comfort and support for Pine Ridge Middle School, whether it’s delivering food donations or sending thoughtful notes and offers of help.”

On Thursday, April 17, three buses from Lexington County’s Pine Ridge Middle School were traveling back from a field trip in Charlotte when a tire blew on one of the buses, causing an accident on the Chester County section of Interstate 77.

The other two buses were not involved in the accident; however, they did have to swerve.

According to a release from Lexington County School District Two, the bus was carrying three adults and 35 students; many were transported to a nearby hospital for further medical evaluation.

On Friday, April 18, the district confirmed there was a fatality. Shortly after, the individual was later identified as a 13-year-old band student, Jose.

Since the accident, the community came to Pine Ridge Middle School to pay their respects, leaving flowers, candy and other mementos.
