Lexington’s football team is preparing for its new season under first-year head coach Stewart Young.
Young joins the Wildcats’ sidelines after serving on Saluda’s staff for the past 21 seasons, including 11 as the team’s head coach. Young is credited with turning the Saluda program into a regular contender in 2A, and he is seeking to do the same at Lexington.
“It’s been a good big challenge, but I knew it would be,” Young said.
“You get somewhere new, and you have to learn people. We have to learn the processes of how things operate within the building and in the athletic department and all those things. So, that’s the thing I had to do, just learn a lot of this stuff, and I’m still learning to this day.”
Like Young, his team is also still learning. They’ve had to balance get- ting used to a new system and focus on improving their skills.
Young wants his teams to be disciplined in all facets of the game, as well as tough and prepared. He also wants players to avoid beating themselves up.
“I think that’s something we emphasize a lot,” Young said. “Then, of course, the main thing, probably the most important, is to come together as a family and be more than just a team and more than just a coaching staff. We want to make this thing family-oriented and make sure the kids, at the end of the day, love each other.”
Lexington will have to play smart if it wants to succeed in its region. The Wildcats play in one of the toughest conferences in the state with Dutch Fork, Irmo, White Knoll, River Bluff and Chapin. Young understands this and is looking forward to testing his team against the best.
“They see what everybody sees, and they know how good those guys in our region are,” Young said. “We’ll have to find ways to take advantage of any type of weakness we can find and play hard, play fast and be physical.”
There are still a lot of questions Young has about his team. He went most of the summer without seeing them play full-on tackle football. These first few games will be key in setting the tone.
Lexington returns a good chunk of its 2024 roster, and Young is excited to see what they can do in his system.
Wesley Gorsage is the team’s starting tight end and has star potential, Young said.
Nigel Lewis and Sawyer Headley will be the team’s top receivers. They’ll receive passes from Avery Coyle, who was the backup last year and got some starting experience.
Vic Smith and Mason Toll will lead the defense. They will line up on the defensive line and attempt to pressure opposing quarterbacks.
Caleb Schrodt is the player to watch at the linebacker spot.
In the secondary, Young is pleased with the team’s depth and feels they can plug and play many guys.
“Been very pleased with the attitudes of the kids this summer and the effort,” Young said. “They just seem to want to play football, and that’s always a good thing.”
