Another week of fall sports has passed, and there was tons of action going on as the first playoff competitions began.
Local swim teams jumped in the pool for states, football teams continued their region seasons and volleyball teams started to wrap up theirs. With so much going on, many local athletes had a chance to put up impressive performances.
This week’s Athlete of the Week winners come from Lexington and Chapin. Each had exceptional individual performances for their teams in key contests.
Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek. To submit a nominee for consideration, email a photo and short bio to sports@lexingtonchronicle.com.
Lexington running back Shannon Lytes played a phenomenal game in the Wildcats’ win over White Knoll.
Lytes helped Lexington overcome a 14-7 halftime deficit and win 38-14. He scored three touchdowns, all in the second half, and ran for over 200 yards.
In his first varsity season, Lytes is carving out a sizable role with the Wildcats. His performance against the Timberwolves was his most productive this season, crossing the 100-yard mark for the second time this season.
As Lexington looks to end its region season right, the Wildcats will look for Lytes to keep up his contributions.
Chapin swimmer Jacqueline Bonavilla was the only Lexington County athlete to win gold at the SCHSL swimming championships, and she did it twice.
Bonavilla finished first in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. She was also part of Chapin’s third-place-finishing 200 freestyle relay team.
Her efforts in the pool helped Chapin finish the competition as the fifth-place team overall.
