Lexington County American Legion teams begin postseason play

Posted

It’s playoff time for American Legion baseball teams in South Carolina.

The Senior League postseason tournament begins this week with teams going head-to-head in best-of-three series to earn a spot in the double-elimination bracket.

Two of Lexington County’s three teams qualified for the playoffs this season.

West Columbia finished third in the League 2 Midlands conference to earn its spot. The team will play Summerville in the opening round. Games one and three will be at Summerville.

Chapin/Newberry is also in the tournament, but will have to do more work than other teams to advance.

Since the group finished fourth in a five-team conference, Chapin/Newberry earned a spot in the playoffs, but  had to win a play-in game to advance to the best-of-three round.

Chapin/Newberry played against Horry in the play-in on Monday, winning 12-2. The team will now be matched up with Florence in the first round.

The double elimination portion of the tournament starts next week on July 20. The playoffs will last the rest of that week, with the championship game taking place on July 26 at Sumter’s Riley Park.

Last week marked the end of the regular season and was the last time all three local teams were in action at once.

Lexington finished fourth in its conference and missed the playoffs altogether, ending its 2026 campaign.

The team at least ended the year on a high note, winning all three of its games last week. Lexington knocked off Sumter 8-3, Richland 6-5 and West Columbia 7-3.

Lexington concluded the season (9-8) overall and (5-7) in league. The conference standings were incredibly close, with only two games separating Lexington from the top-placing Sumter.

West Columbia finished third in the standings, tied with Lexington, but edging the team out thanks to head-to-head wins. West Columbia had the opportunity to improve its spot ahead of the postseason, but lost two of its three final regular-season contests.

Chapin also had the chance to move up but lost two of its final three going into the playoffs. The team finished the regular season (7-10) overall and (5-7) in conference.
