With the end of the spring sports season right around the corner, it’s almost time for the end-of-year All-Star events, honoring some of South Carolina’s top athletes.
The South Carolina High School Coaches Association recently announced its selections for seven postseason All-Star events, including two that will put the best players in South Carolina against the best in North Carolina.
The Clash of the Carolinas boys and girls soccer games put the best players from each Carolina against each other. This annual event draws a lot of attention and determines which state can claim bragging rights for the next year.
Seven local athletes have been selected for the event, three boys and four girls.
On the boys side, Gray Collegiate has two players in the event. Jay Ethridge and Noah Mitchell will represent the War Eagles and their state in the game. Lexington’s Barrett Wilson was also selected for the event.
Lexington will have two players on the girls team. Alyssa Frazier and Sidney Kitts will team up with Chapin’s Grace Benson and River Bluff’s Julia Salo to take down the squad from North Carolina.
The Clash of the Carolinas is not the only postseason All-Star soccer event. There is also the annual North-South game played between the top players within South Carolina.
Lexington County is represented on all four teams. Three players will be on the South boys team and two on the North. The South girls will feature four Lexington County athletes, and the North has one.
Lexington and Chapin are tied for the most selections, with three each.
Ethan Alexander and Nathan Nelson will represent the Wildcats on the south boys team, and Jaylynn Kemmerlin is on the south girls team. Wyatt Jordan and Akel Sogaard are on the North boys team for Chapin, while Kat Haigler is on the girls North team.
Soccer was not the only sport to have its North-South game All-Star rosters announced. The lacrosse and boys golf teams have also been chosen.
14 Lexington County athletes earned a spot in either the girls or boys North-South All-Star game. Lexington leads all teams with four players, including two from its state-championship winning girls lacrosse team.
Izzy Saville and Emersin Clamp will team up again, representing the South girls. Landon Flenniken and Thomas Werny will play for the South boys.
Other athletes in the boys game include White Knoll’s Kenny Chandler, River Bluff’s Tyler Cast and Dutch Fork’s Aidan Shaw Williams on the south team. James Gucciardo and Noah Norwood of Chapin will play for the north.
In the girls game, River Bluff’s Sienna Woodley and Bryleigh Howe, White Knoll’s Brooklyn Crumpton, Dutch Fork’s Addison Smalls and Chapin’s Brooke Holmes will be on the field.
Rounding things out, three local golfers earned a spot in their All-Star match. Nathanael Caughman of River Bluff and Dylan Leicht of Lexington will play for the South. Harrison James of Chapin is on the north squad.
These events are meant to be friendly competitions with no real stakes. It gives many athletes one last run with some of their closest teammates and rivals before ending their careers.
Many of these games will be played in the next few weeks and more rosters will soon be announced for the baseball and softball All-Stars.
