Lexington County deputies arrest suspect accused of shooting, killing unarmed man

Posted

A Little Mountain resident accused of shooting an unarmed man to death has been arrested.

Nathan Thomas Caldwell, 20, is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime following the Oct. 16 shooting, according to the Lexington County Sheriff's Department.

The victim was identified by the Lexington County Coroner's Office as Brendon Armontae Nyquan Gray, 21 of Swansea, who was shot in the upper body.

“After reviewing the information they gathered during their investigation, detectives determined Caldwell and the shooting victim fought Saturday night and continued to talk over social media about fighting again,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon is quoted in a release. “A bunch of people showed up at Caldwell’s house in the 200 block of Stevens Creek Road Monday evening and he told investigators when he saw one of them had a gun he got his gun.”

The release states that after people showed up to his home, Caldwell stepped outside and shot the person closest to him. An individual then proceeded to take the shooting victim to a fire department across the line into Newberry County.

"Mr. Gray was transported in a personal vehicle to an area Fire Station in Newberry County where he was pronounced dead due to his injuries," the coroner's office posted to social media.

According to the sheriff's department release, crime scene investigators processed the car that transported the victim and Caldwell's house.

Detectives are working to identify the people who approached Caldwell's house, with one of the individuals having fired a shot into the home as they drove away.

Caldwell is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center, with bond having been denied on the murder charge. Bond for the weapon possession charge was set at $30,000.

The sheriff's department release release states that this is an open and active investigation and that more charges and arrests are possible. Anyone with information is encouraged to share information that may help detectives locate others involved through the Crimestoppers mobile app.

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
