Lexington County girls basketball teams look to end season strong ahead of playoffs

Posted

It is the last week of the girls basketball regular season in Lexington County and the stakes couldn’t be higher for a few teams as they try to end the year strong and go into the playoffs confident.

Dutch Fork took a slight edge in the 5A Region 4 title race last week after beating both Lexington and White Knoll. The Silver Foxes completed their season sweep over the Timberwolves, winning 69-37. The team then avenged its earlier loss against Lexington by beating the Wildcats 45-31 at home.

Lexington and White Knoll were tied for second entering this week with 6-2 records. White Knoll had an edge in the standings after beating Lexington in their previous matchup.

The two teams met again this Tuesday, but this time, Lexington won to split the season series and jump into second in the standings.

Elsewhere around Lexington County, Gray Collegiate is sitting comfortably in second place in its region after picking up a win over Aiken on Monday. The War Eagles won 66-25 and conclude their season on Wednesday against Gilbert.

Airport, Gilbert and Brookland-Cayce also ended their seasons on Wednesday. The Eagles are right in the middle of the region standings, while the Bearcats and Indians are at the bottom.

American Leadership, Batesburg-Leesville and Pelion began the week as the bottom three teams in their conference. It’s too late for any of them to move into the top half of the standings, but they can still swap with each other with a few games against each other on the schedule.

Northside Christian was one of the hottest teams in the county all season. The Crusaders' unbeaten streak came to an end last week with consecutive losses to Heathwood Hall.

The Crusaders bounced back at the end of last week with a win against Cardinal Newman, but the losses to Heathwood Hall means Northside is no longer able to win the region championship.

The team is locked into second place and will try to end the season with positive momentum and advance deep into the playoffs.

Playoff basketball will begin next week for many teams around Lexington County.
