The girls basketball season continues to be exciting with a few teams around Lexington County playing great basketball at the start of region play.
Six teams earned a region win and to build momentum heading into the regular season’s final few weeks.
Northside Christian remained undefeated this season and improved to 15-0 with a win in its region-opening contest against Augusta Christian. The team is off to the best start in its history and has already broken the program record for wins in a season, surpassing last season's 14-win total.
Sophomore Evie Godfrey is shining in her first season with the team, averaging 20 points per game. She has scored at least 13 points in every game and had 21 in the win over Augusta Christian.
Dutch Fork and Lexington are still the two teams to watch in the race for the 5A Region 4 title. Both teams won both their games this week, including their region opener.
The Silver Foxes improved to 12-1 with wins over Keenan and Chapin. Dutch Fork made a powerful statement against Chapin, beating the Eagles 69-26 to start 1-0 in the conference.
Lexington beat Catawba Ridge and Irmo to improve to 9-2 this season. The Wildcats dominated both games winning 64-23 and 60-37.
Dutch Fork and Lexington went head-to-head for the region championship last season. The teams went undefeated against all other opponents, and the Silver Foxes swept Lexington to earn the title.
The teams will play their first of two games against each other this week in a game where the winner can give themselves an edge early in the race for the title.
White Knoll was the third winner from the conference this week, beating River Bluff 61-18.
The teams from 5A Region 4 were fairly successful in their non-region games last week, going a combined 5-2 in out-of-conference games.
Aside from Lexington and Dutch Fork’s wins, Chapin edged out Christ Church 49-40, Irmo blew out Newberry 77-33 and White Knoll survived Fort Dorchester 36-31. River Bluff lost its game to Denmark-Olar 52-35, and White Knoll started the week with a loss against Lower Richland.
Gray Collegiate, Airport and Gilbert had solid weeks in the county’s 4A conference.
Gray added two wins to improve to 3-1 in region games. The War Eagles crushed Airport and Brookland-Cayce 60-26 and 67-27.
The team’s lone region loss came against North Augusta in its fourth game of the season. Gray has looked dominant in its three region wins, holding all of its foes under 30 points.
Despite losing big to Gray, Airport started the week with a win over Midland Valley. The Eagles are still in the hunt, sitting at 2-2 in region with some key matchups coming up.
Gilbert started last week with a close overtime loss to South Aiken but was able to bounce back and earn its first region win after beating Midland Valley 42-39.
Brookland-Cayce remains winless in the conference after dropping its games against Gray and Aiken.
Lexington County’s 2A teams start region games this week. American Leadership will play Saluda and Strom Thurmond, Pelion will play Ninety Six and Saluda and Batesburg-Leesville will play Strom and Ninety Six.
Abby Livingston had a near triple-double with 37 points, seven assists and eight steals for Irmo in a win over Newberry.
Brooke Holmes scored 18 points and added seven rebounds in Chapin’s win over Christ Church.
Emory Waters-Inman finished with a double-double in White Knoll’s win against River Bluff, recording 22 points and 13 rebounds.
Evie Godfrey came up big for Northside Christian, scoring 21 points and eight steals in a win over Augusta Christian.
Kadence Walker-Lee had 18 points, seven rebounds and seven steals as Gray Collegiate knocked off Airport.
