Lexington County locals selected to South Carolina Association of Lettermen Hall of Fame

The University of South Carolina Association of Lettermen recently announced its 2026 Athletics Hall of Fame class, and two former Lexington County athletes were selected.

Bert Sorin and Savannah McCaskill left a mark on their respective programs during their time in the garnet and black. The pair will be officially inducted into the Gamecocks Hall of Fame during a ceremony on Nov. 5. The entire 2026 class will be honored during homecoming week.

McCaskill was a member of South Carolina’s women’s soccer team and spent her high school years playing at Irmo.

During her time at South Carolina, McCaskill led the Gamecocks to their first-ever Collegiate Cup appearance in 2017.

She racked up individual accolades as well, including two first-team All-American selections in 2016 and 2017 and three first-team All-SEC selections in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

McCaskill is a two-time SEC Offensive Player of the Year, winning in 2016 and 2017. She was also named SEC Freshman of the Year in 2014.

In 2017, she set the school record with 17 goals in a single season. That record lasted until 2024, when it was broken by Cat Barry.

McCaskill currently is the program record-holder for points in a single season. She is first in career shot attempts, second in assists, fourth in goals and fourth in points.

Her South Carolina jersey was retired by the team last fall.

After her Gamecock career, McCaskill was selected second overall in the 2018 NWSL draft. She currently plays for Gotham FC.

Sorin was a member of the Gamecocks track and field team from 1995 to 1999.

The Dutch Fork High School graduate was unrecruited coming into college and joined the team as a walk-on.

He quickly showed he belonged on the team and became one of the best hammer throwers in program history. Sorin would go on to become a four-time NCAA All-American.

Sorin is the 1999 SEC Champion and meet record holder in the 35 lbs. weight throw and ranks third all-time in the South Carolina record books for the event.

He earned All-SEC honors in 1998 in the hammer throw, finishing second at the conference championships. Sorin scored all four years at the SEC Indoor Championships in the 35 lbs. weight and all four years at the SEC Outdoor Championships in the Hammer Throw.

Sorin qualified for nationals three times in the 35 lbs. weight throw and was a two-time NCAA qualifier in the hammer throw.

After South Carolina, Sorin went on to compete in the U.S. Track and Field Olympic trials in 2000 and 2004.

Sorin currently runs the family business, Sorinex, an exercise equipment manufacturing company.

Other notable inductees into the class include former Gamecock football coach Steve Spurrier, women’s basketball player, Tyasha Harris and soccer player Sabrina D’Angelo.

The entire 2010 and 2011 South Carolina baseball teams will also be inducted. The Gamecocks won back-to-back College World Series in 2010 and 2011 under the leadership of former athletics director Ray Tanner.
