Lexington County softball teams begin playoffs

Posted

High school softball teams in Lexington County have concluded the regular season and starting on Wednesday, May 3, begin their postseason runs.

Here are how some of the local teams ended the regular season and who they have been grouped with for postseason play.

5A

Lexington

The Lexington Wildcats capped off an impressive 19-2-1 regular season with a Region IV-5A title. The region championship puts them in a good position to make a run in the playoffs as the one seed in Upper District 2.

Lexington will play J.L. Mann on Wednesday and will face the winner or loser of Blythewood and Boiling Springs on Friday.

Chapin

The Eagles finished right behind Lexington for the Region IV-5A title this season with a 17-5 overall record.

Chapin will begin playoff action on Wednesday against Stratford in Lower District 6. Stratford is the third place finisher from Region VI. The other two teams in the Lower District 6 bracket are Ashley Ridge and Carolina Forest.

White Knoll

This year’s Timberwolves softball squad finished third in Region IV-5A and with a winning record of 13-9-1 overall. In region play, they went 3-5.

The third place region finish was enough to qualify them for a spot in the Lower District 7 bracket. White Knoll is slated to play their first playoff game on Wednesday against Conway and will then play either the winner or loser of the other game in the bracket between Berkeley and West Ashley.

Dutch Fork

The Silver Foxes ended the 2023 regular season with an 8-9 record overall and a 2-6 mark in region action. They went on to finish in fourth place in Region IV-5A which qualifies them for a spot in the SCHSL playoffs.

As the fourth seed in the Upper District 1 bracket, they are scheduled to play T.L. Hanna on Wednesday to open up the playoff run. On Friday, they will face the winner or loser of Dorman and Nation Ford.

4A

Irmo

The Irmo Yellow Jackets came in fifth place in Region V-4A after a 5-12 overall record and 4-6 record in region play.

The Yellow Jackets qualified for the playoffs as the 12-seed in Lower Bracket 1. On May 2, they will face off against 5-seed South Florence and on May 4 will play against the winner or loser of James Island and Ridge View.

Airport

The Airport Eagles achieved a winning record in the 2023 regular season at 13-8 overall. Their 3-5 region record was enough to earn fourth place in Region IV-4A and qualify for the state playoffs.

The Eagles will enter the postseason as the 16-seed in Upper State Bracket 1 and have received the tough task of playing one-seeded Westside on May 2.

They will play the winner or loser of Riverside and Indian Land on May 4.

3A

Gilbert

With an unblemished, 10-0 region record, Gilbert won the 2023 Region V-3A title and the number one seed in the Lower District 5 bracket.

Gilbert looks to continue their winning ways in the postseason as they face Philip Simmons in the opener on May 3. Depending on that result, they will face the winner or loser of the game between Loris and Darlington.

Swansea

The Swansea Tigers are coming into the playoffs on a high note. On May 1, they beat Brookland-Cayce 10-0 in a game that was played to break the tie between them for second place in Region V-3A.

The win not only clinched second place in the region, but gave them a more favorable playoff position. The Tigers will start the playoffs in Lower District 8 against Battery Creek on May 3 and will play the winner or loser of Aynor and Crestwood on May 5.

Brookland-Cayce

The Bearcats were forced into a one-game tiebreaker for second place in Region V-3A against Swansea and fell 10-0 to solidify a third place region finish.

The loss also moves them into the Lower District 6 bracket where they will face the second place team from Region VIII, Beaufort, in the opening game on May 3. Depending on that game’s outcome, Brookland-Cayce will face either Marlboro County or Waccamaw in the winners or losers bracket on May 5.

2A

Gray Collegiate Academy

The War Eagles took home this season’s Region IV-2A title by going 15-6 in regular season play and posting an undefeated 7-0 record against region foes.

The region title gives Gray the top seed in the Upper District 4 bracket. Gray’s postseason run will begin against Blacksburg on May 3 and will continue against either the winner or loser of the game between Abbeville and Pelion.

Pelion

Pelion came in third place this season in Region III-2A. This places the Panthers in the same Upper District 4 bracket that Gray Collegiate is in.

On May 3, Pelion will take on Abbeville and depending on the result, will play either Gray Collegiate or Blacksburg in the winners or losers bracket.
